| Marcia I completed a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science at Flinders University in November 2007. At present I am doing some study at O'Halloran Hill TAFE College to obtain a Vocational Graduate Diploma in Spatial Information Systems which I am about half way through.
I am currently working for Aurecon, an engineering consultancy company as a GIS Analyst. I report to the Senior GIS Analyst with whom I have a good working relationship. I am also accountable to various project leaders who require GIS tasks to be completed for them. This involves liaising with them to establish what approach is needed to create the best possible out come to meet their needs.
One of my responsibilities at Aurecon is to keep records of incoming and outgoing data and maps. This is done in data management spread sheets, one for each project we are involved with. They assist us in keeping track of data and allow us to answer any queries that project leaders may have.
Aurecon has licenses for ESRI ArcView and some of their extensions including Maplex, 3D Analyst, Publisher, Network Analyst and Spatial Analyst. They also have a licence for MapInfo which we use only to convert TAB files to shp files for use in ArcView. I use ArcView to produce the required maps and also some of the extensions if needed.
As part of my job I am required to organise and prioritise tasks so that project leaders have an estimate of when the job can be expected. I like to produce quality work which can increase the output time and exceed the deadline. But I generally find that this is rewarded by client satisfaction because they have a quality piece of work rather than a piece of work that is completed on time but doesn't meet client needs.
The clients I deal with at Aurecon are mostly internal. I am required to inform them of how busy we are and whether or not the task can be completed with the resources we currently have. If more resources are needed I inform them after first checking with the senior GIS Analyst. At times it is necessary to call government departments to access information about data sets such as metadata.
One of the jobs I was involved with at Aurecon involved producing numerous maps for a report. One of the maps required me to come up with a way to show information in text boxes in a way that was visually easy to read and understand. Quite often the projects I work on are of a confidential nature and I'm required to sign a privacy statement saying that I won't discuss the details with people not associated with the project. Working as a team member is a major requirement at Aurecon as all the projects involve people from different sectors within the company. I need to be able to communicate effectively with all the people involved so that the end product is high quality.
I believe that all people deserve to have their culture recognised in a way that allows an understanding of the values held by the people in that culture. All people in our society have traditions that are a major part of who they are and therefore need to be recognised by the greater community so that they can be valued and respected in a way that allows the people within that culture to retain their identity. I feel that as a responsible user of GIS regarding the code of ethics I need to represent data accurately so that its current use fits the for purpose for which it was made. I am currently working on a project located in Port Hedland which involves the creation of a master plan for the WA Ports Authority which is sensitive to the needs of the local Aboriginal Community. This has given me insight into the complexities of finding a balance between industry and community.
I have lived in South Australia now for 18 years and am familiar with the locations of most major towns and some minor ones as well. I have travelled to some remote areas of South Australia so this has allowed me to gain some geographical familiarity with the towns I have visited. The projects I have been involved in have been in locations all over South Australia and Australia including a mining project where we had to plot mines all over South Australia.
As part of the TAFE Diploma I have become familiar with GPS use. I am able to download data from the hand set so that it can be used with ArcMap. During my time at Aurecon I have also become familiar with the various map projections used and which ones are best for particular projects. Here at Aurecon we mainly use GDA 1994 MGA zone 54 because most of our projects are local and in this zone. For projects that are South Australian based we use GDA 1994 South Australia Lambert and when the project is Australia wide we use GDA 1994 Geoscience Australia Lambert. I have an understanding that there is a 200m shift in a north-easterly direction between AMG and MGA The extent of the project dictates the coordinate system used. Most of the projects I have been involved with have required the cadastre to be included as one of the layers. Depending on the detail included in the attribute table we are able to see details of land ownership or from information in the table we are able to obtain the required information from the Lands Title Office. |
